Soto's three-run homer lifts Mets to 6-3 win, stops five-game skid

Juan Soto finished with three hits as New York avoided further wild-card damage; Zac Thornton and Dedniel Núñez closed it out.

Juan Soto's three-run homer powered the New York Mets to a 6-3 victory that kept the Philadelphia Phillies from gaining ground in the National League wild-card race. Soto doubled as well and finished with three hits in the game that also ended a five-game losing streak for the last-place Mets, their longest under interim manager Andy Green.

The Mets plated three in the first inning, with Carson Benge delivering an RBI single and A.J. Ewing's two-run single capping the rally; Benge reached base three times. Soto's three-run shot provided the other New York offense. For Philadelphia, Edmundo Sosa went 3 for 3 with a home run and a double, Derek Hill also homered and Bryson Stott had an RBI double. Francisco Lindor went 2 for 5 with a double and remained at 299 career homers.

Rookie left-hander Zac Thornton (5-5) worked six innings, allowing two runs and five hits while striking out four and walking one. Dedniel Núñez recorded four outs for his second career save and his first since July 13, 2024. José Urquidy tossed 4 2/3 innings of scoreless bulk relief in his Phillies debut after being designated for assignment by the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday and claimed off waivers Thursday. Philadelphia opener Tim Mayza (3-4) was charged with three runs; he threw 33 pitches but recorded just one out — the shortest outing by a Philadelphia starter since Cristopher Sánchez got only one out against the Washington Nationals on July 29, 2021.

Jackson Chourio hit a three-run homer and Sal Frelick singled in the go-ahead run in the 10th as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-5. The win was Milwaukee's eighth victory in 10 games despite blowing a two-run lead in the ninth, and Chad Patrick got three outs for his sixth save.

Trevino's bases-loaded, two-run single in sixth lifts Reds to 6-4 win over Cubs

Trevino's two-run single provided the decisive rally.

Jose Trevino lined a two-run single to right with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, and the Cincinnati Reds rallied for a 6-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. CJ Abrams' 30-30 night fuels Nationals' 9-1 rout of Cardinals

Cade Cavalli reached 200 strikeouts as Washington rolled in St. Louis.

CJ Abrams became the 52nd player to join the 30-30 club and jump-started a 9-1 Nationals win by driving in a run, stealing his 30th base and helping a three-run first. Cade Cavalli (13-5) struck out six and recorded his 200th strikeout in five innings while Dylan Crews' 12th homer and Yohandy Morales' two-run double padded the lead as Kyle Leahy (10-5) allowed a season-high seven runs (six earned) on five hits.

Rice’s 39th and Cole’s 162nd power Yankees to 9-2 win in Phoenix

Yankees opened with a five-run first inning and never looked back.

New York used a five-run first inning — the first five batters all reached and George Lombard Jr.'s two-run single made it 5-0 — en route to a 9-2 victory in Phoenix. Ben Rice hit his 39th homer in the third and Lombard added a solo shot in the sixth to finish with three RBI. Gerrit Cole (9-9) allowed two runs and four hits over six innings to earn his 162nd win, while Eduardo Rodriguez (15-7) needed 45 pitches to get three outs in the first and gave up seven runs over 5 1/3 innings.

Glasnow struck out a season-high 10 as Abner yielded all five runs in the eighth.

Mookie Betts homered twice and Los Angeles went deep four times in a five-run eighth en route to an 8-2 victory over San Francisco. Tyler Glasnow (5-1) allowed two runs and three hits in six innings with a season-high 10 strikeouts, Giants reliever Philip Abner gave up all five runs in the eighth, and rookie Josue De Paula lined a two-out double in the sixth after earlier singling and scoring the tying run in the fifth.
