Sánchez Takes Lead in Wins as Phillies Top Mets 7-2

Cristopher Sánchez outlasts the Mets lineup to collect his major league-leading 18th victory in a 7-2 Philadelphia win.

Cristopher Sánchez left Citi Field with the distinction of a major league-leading 18th win after helping the Philadelphia Phillies to a 7-2 victory over the New York Mets. Sánchez surrendered six hits — including Bo Bichette’s sixth-inning homer — and struck out six over 6 1/3 innings, snapping a tie with the Boston Red Sox’s Sonny Gray for the big league lead in wins. The achievement marked the first time a Phillies pitcher has led the majors in wins since Steve Carlton recorded 23 in 1982.

Philadelphia’s offense did the bulk of its damage on a three-run triple by Justin Crawford and was supplemented by two RBI from Luis Arraez. Alec Bohm and Trea Turner each delivered run-scoring hits, and Kyle Schwarber reached base with a career-tying four walks. The Mets’ run production included Bo Bichette’s sixth-inning homer and a pinch-hit RBI single from Brett Baty.

On the mound for New York, rookie Jonah Tong (2-2) absorbed four runs and struck out five over 4 2/3 innings as the last-place Mets finished 36-45 at home, their worst mark at Citi Field since the 2013 team went 33-48. The Phillies (86-70), who salvaged a split of the four-game series, entered Sunday in the third National League wild-card spot, one game behind the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres and four games clear of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Despite a rainy forecast and the postponement of a ceremony honoring retiring Mets radio broadcaster Howie Rose, the game began on time and wasn’t interrupted; the crowd of 33,611 cheered and chanted Rose’s name after “Hello, Goodbye” was played in the eighth. The Mets drew 2,712,120 fans this season, a drop of 5,870 fans per game from last season.

Chicago moved closer to clinching a postseason berth.

Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his 45th home run and Michael Conforto and Seiya Suzuki also homered as the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-1. David Peterson (9-8) allowed one run on three hits in seven innings, while Rhett Lowder (6-12) gave up five earned runs on six hits. Alex Bregman left after being struck by a foul ball and Reds right-hander Carson Spiers allowed four runs and three homers in four innings.

Arenado's third grand slam fuels Diamondbacks' 8-4 win over Yankees

Nolan Arenado hit his third grand slam of the season, homering on a 2-1 pitch from reliever Brent Headrick in the fifth to lift Arizona to an 8-4 victory over New York. One of five Arizona relievers, Justin Martinez (3-0) helped hold the Yankees to three hits over the final 6 1/3 innings while Heliot Ramos, George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones homered for New York in the third off Corbin Burnes.

Roden's three-run homer and Kremer's six innings carry Twins to 8-0 win

Alan Roden hit a three-run homer and drove in a career-high four as the Minnesota Twins beat the Los Angeles Angels 8-0. Dean Kremer yielded one hit over six stellar innings, Josh Bell had three hits and two RBI while Brooks Lee had three hits and scored three runs, and Bailey Ober pitched the final three innings to earn his first career save.

Griffin Jax tossed five shutout innings and Tampa Bay erupted for four first-inning runs in a 5-1 victory over Boston. Jonny DeLuca’s two-run, bases-loaded double and Chandler Simpson’s two-run single opened the rally, while Trevor Story’s one-out homer in the ninth spoiled the shutout; Cole Sulser, Brody Hopkins and Steven Matz each threw a scoreless inning in relief.

Yastrzemski's three-run homer in four-run sixth clinches NL East as Braves beat Astros 4-2

Braves clinch the NL East title for the seventh time in nine years.

Mike Yastrzemski hit a three-run homer during a four-run sixth that propelled the Atlanta Braves to a 4-2 win and clinched the NL East title for the seventh time in nine years. Ozzie Albies tied it with an RBI single before Yastrzemski’s blast off Bryan King (3-6), Jose Altuve homered in the fourth and Yainer Diaz in the eighth, Victor Mederos (5-1) entered with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth and struck out Altuve before inducing a groundout by Diaz to end the inning, and Dylan Dodd pitched the ninth for his second save after Martín Pérez allowed one run on six hits in 4 1/3 innings while Hunter Brown struck out 10 over five scoreless.
