Carroll’s two-run blast in ninth lifts Diamondbacks over Marlins, 8-7

Corbin Carroll pulled a splitter over the right-field fence for his 21st homer with one out in the ninth, capping a comeback that erased a late three-run deficit and kept Arizona within 2 1/2 games of the final NL wild card.

PHOENIX — Corbin Carroll delivered the decisive swing, drilling a winning, two-run homer with one out in the ninth to lift the Arizona Diamondbacks to an 8-7 victory over the Miami Marlins. Carroll pulled a splitter from reliever Jack Ralston (0-1) over the right-field fence for his 21st homer of the season, a timely blow after a prolonged slump since the All-Star break in which he hit just .214.

The late rally featured a pair of big swings. Jordan Lawlar hit a two-run homer in the eighth off Tyler Zuber to cut the D-backs' deficit to 7-6, and Carroll’s ninth-inning shot turned a one-run hole into an 8-7 lead. Corbin Burnes was touched for five runs over 4 2/3 innings, including back-to-back homers by Jakob Marsee and Javier Sanoja, while Miami starter Sandy Alcantara allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings and struck out six.

The ninth inning unfolded chaotically: Marlins closer Pete Fairbanks started the frame, walked leadoff hitter Gabriel Moreno and threw one pitch to Geraldo Perdomo before leaving with an apparent injury. Ralston entered and retired Perdomo on a sacrifice bunt before Carroll’s homer that stayed just inside the right-field foul pole. Alcantara finished his outing by escaping a one-out, bases-loaded jam when he struck out Nolan Arenado and retired Tim Tawa on a flyout. Alcantara has thrown 205 innings this season, the most in the big leagues, and Juan Morillo (4-4) struck out the side in the ninth.

Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his 42nd homer to match the Cubs record for a left-handed batter and finished with four hits and four RBI to power Chicago past Atlanta, 7-3. David Peterson (8-8) allowed one run on three hits over six-plus innings, and Atlanta’s three-run seventh featured a pinch-hit, two-run homer by Mike Yastrzemski before Ronald Acuña Jr. hit into a game-ending double play.

Aaron Judge capped a six-run eighth with a 415-foot, three-run home run — his 18th and his first since May 24 — as the Yankees beat the Twins 8-3 and clinched their 61st postseason berth. Judge had been 3 for 20 with 11 strikeouts since returning after missing 84 games, and John Schreiber earned his second save.

McKinstry scores on Varland misplay in ninth as Tigers edge Blue Jays 6-5

Zach McKinstry scored the winning run on a missed-catch error in the ninth.

Brett Callahan tied it with an RBI single in the eighth, and Zach McKinstry scored the winning run in the ninth after Vladimir Guerrero Jr. fielded a dribbler and pitcher Louis Varland missed the throw to first, giving Detroit a 6-5 victory. José Soriano threw 6 1/3 innings and had a perfect game through five before Detroit erupted for four runs in the seventh, highlighted by Dillon Dingler's RBI single, Max Clark's two-run double and Spencer Torkelson's RBI double. Kazuma Okamoto hit a three-run homer for Toronto in the seventh, Tyler Kinley worked a hitless eighth and Kenley Jansen closed for his 20th save; Varland (5-6) surrendered the winning run.

Padres outlast Rockies 8-7 as Machado and Tatis Jr. homer

Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. homered as the San Diego Padres edged the Colorado Rockies 8-7 in Denver, extending their winning streak to eight games. Mason Miller worked a one-hit ninth for his 37th save, while Casey Mize allowed two runs and eight hits in five innings to earn the win as Tomoyuki Sugano gave up six runs in five innings.

Henderson’s eighth-inning homer lifts Orioles past Mets, 2-1

Pete Alonso was held hitless in his return to Citi Field.

Pete Alonso was held hitless in his return to Citi Field Monday night, and Gunnar Henderson launched a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning to lift Baltimore to a 2-1 win. The homer came off Dedniel Núñez (1-1) immediately after Alonso struck out, and A.J. Ewing homered as the Mets were eliminated from playoff contention.

Mathews carries no-hit bid into sixth as Cardinals top Giants 2-1

Quinn Mathews took a no-hitter into the sixth and struck out eight while allowing a run on four hits and two walks in 6 2/3 innings as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1. Alec Burleson drove in a run with an RBI single and Leo Bernal's single produced the other run, and Riley O'Brien closed it for his 37th save in 45 opportunities.
